Tactical vs. Practical: Why We Redesigned the Weighted Vest for Women
Share
Most weighted vests weren't made with you in mind. They were engineered for military training and male athletes, so it's no surprise that women to struggle with boxy vests designed for a completely different body. For too long, we've had to make do with equipment that ignores our unique anatomy and ergonomics, which makes what should be a rewarding part of our bone-strengthening journey feel like an uncomfortable compromise.
We set out to change that.
The problem with "one-size-fits-all" vests
If you shop for a standard weighted vest, you'll find most of them are boxy, rigid, and built for broader frames. They tend to sit flat across the chest and put most of the weight high on the shoulders, which doesn't mesh well with most women's bodies.
Many of us know all too well the frustrations of wearing vests like these: painful chafing under the straps, pressure on your collarbones, and pressure that gets in the way with breathing deeply when it bounces with every step. Research on load-bearing vests matches pretty well with what many women have experienced firsthand.
Unisex vests fit women significantly worse, especially around the bust, and that discomfort just increases when you move around (which is, you know, what you're supposed to do with a vest on). And when the weight isn't distributed evenly, it can change the way you walk and strain your neck and lower back, which isn't exactly likely to make you want to strap one on and go for a stroll.
Ultimately, when a vest doesn't fit right, it inevitably ends up staying in the closet where it can't do anything to support your bones, your muscles, or your future self.
Can a woman wear a men's weighted vest?
Sure, you can technically wear a men's vest, but there is a world of difference between gear that works ok and gear that actually supports your unique shape and your bone health journey.
A men's vest will often squash your breast tissue, sit too low on a shorter torso, and limit how deeply you can breathe. Studies show that when women use gear designed for men, they deal with constant discomfort because the equipment doesn't have the right curves and customization. When your gear ignores your anatomy, it turns a great health tool into a major source of frustration.
If a vest shifts awkwardly, digs into your shoulders, or limits your breathing, it's going to change how you move, and over time, that can lead to compensating with poor posture. A vest designed for a woman's body eliminates most of these problems from the start.
How we redesigned the YVO Warrior Vest

When we set out to build the YVO Warrior Vest, we knew that most vests sit on top of the breasts. Ours goes around them.
That single design choice changes everything. It means the vest sits naturally with your center of gravity and spreads weight evenly, so your spine stays neutral and your muscles can do their job without fighting the vest.
We also moved the weight placement. Many vests load weight high on the chest and shoulders, which can strain your neck over time. The YVO Warrior Vest distributes weight lower and closer to your hips, where your body can naturally carry load. This encourages better posture and more natural walking mechanics.
And because most women are wearing a weighted vest for walks, errands, strength training, and daily life, we wanted it to feel like functional clothing. Our adjustable weighted vest for women includes eight modular 2.5 lb pouches so you can start with lighter loads and build up from there as you get stronger. It has large pockets (including one that fits your phone), adjustable straps for different body types, and it's machine washable (a seriously underrated bonus).
We also made it look good. We figure, if your vest looks and feels like something you'd actually want to put on every day, you'll be that much more likely to wear it. And consistency is what makes a real difference in your health over time.
The bigger picture: bone health starts now
Comfort and design are only part of the picture.
Bone health is one of the biggest blind spots in women's health. About 1 in 3 women will develop osteoporosis in their lifetime. And bone loss accelerates during and after menopause, often before most women even think about getting a bone density scan.
Weighted vests can help. When you carry extra load during weight-bearing activities like walking, stair climbing, or bodyweight exercises, it creates mechanical stress on your bones. That stress signals your body to build more bone and slow down bone loss. Research suggests that combining a weighted vest with regular movement may help preserve bone density over time, especially in the hips and spine where fractures are most common.
Every YVO Warrior Vest comes with a free DEXA scan through BodySpec so you can see where your bone health stands and track your progress. The scan starts the conversation, and the vest helps you take daily action.
Built for you, built for every day
We didn't redesign the weighted vest because we thought the fitness industry needed another product. We did it because women deserve a vest that actually fits their bodies, supports their health goals, and feels good enough to wear every single day.
Your walks already count. Adding a vest just makes them count for more.
Carry power.
