If you've got your mind set on getting a new weighted vest and have spent a bunch of time wading through reviews, price comparisons, and all the different features out there trying to figure out which one is the 'right' one, we feel your pain. It's a jungle out there, and most weighted vest buying guides rank vests by specs that don't really consider whether a woman's body will be comfortable wearing them.

Bone density starts to decline after age 30, and the rate of loss accelerates in the years around and after menopause. These are the years when you'll want to be even more consistent with load bearing movement if you want to preserve your bone health. If your cheapo vest gets tossed in your closet after a couple of failed attempts, it can mean losing out on months of strengthening during a window that keeps narrowing as you age.

So our guide starts with the obvious: your body, looking at what makes a vest designed for women feel different from a generic one, and walking through what to look for so you end up with one you'll keep wearing.

Why a vest built for women fits differently

Most weighted vests on the market were designed for a male body, then resized for everyone else, which means the vest might technically “adjust” but it'll never quite fit the way you need it to.

Women's torsos are proportionally shorter than men's, with narrower shoulders and breast tissue that absolutely should not be flattened under rigid plates. Women's center of gravity also sits lower on the body, closer to your hips than your chest. A vest that doesn't account for any of this will pull at your shoulders and ride up your neck, dig into your breasts, or bounce against you (and your girls) with every step.

If you've already tried one of these generic vests and given up on weighted walking, the vest was the problem, not you. Its structure is different because that's what makes it fit and perform better on a woman's body.

Five fit factors to check before you buy

Check these specs before you compare prices or read reviews. They'll help you judge how a vest will actually fit and perform, instead of relying on star ratings or marketing labels like "for women."

1. Check the torso length

The vest should sit high on your trunk and end above your hip bones. If you have a shorter torso (most women do, relative to men), a vest built for a 5'10" frame will hang past your waist, bumping your hips when you walk, and will likely strain your lower back.

Before you buy, look at the vest's listed length and compare it to the distance from your collarbone to your navel. If the vest is longer than that distance, it's going to sit too low and won't feel comfortable as you're walking or working out.

2. Look at the shoulder strap design

Generic vests have straight, parallel shoulder straps spaced for a wider, more square frame. On narrower shoulders, those straps slide outward and end up creating a gap at the neckline, then cause the vest to shift side-to-side when you move.

Look for vests with contoured shoulder straps and a narrower back panel. You'll still want a sliding adjustment system so you can tweak the height of the vest on your torso. Research shows that ill fitting shoulder straps can pull the shoulders forward, which is the opposite of what you want from a vest meant to support good posture.

3. Make sure the front design works around your bust

Chest placement is one of the biggest design differences to look for. If a vest puts weight directly over the chest, it can create pressure on breast tissue and restrict deep breathing during exercise. A women's vest should route weight around the bust instead of over it. The weight should sit above and below the bust, and the chest buckle should fasten above or below (not across) the breasts.

4. Pay attention to weight distribution

This is where biomechanics come in. Men's vests concentrate load on the upper chest and shoulders because that's where men carry their center of gravity. Women's center of gravity sits more toward the hips, so the same load distribution that feels stable on a man will feel top heavy on you.

A weighted vest meant for women will distribute weight evenly across the front and back, and gives you the flexibility to load the lower pockets slightly heavier, which will help you walk with better form. You'll want multiple front and back pockets (not one big front plate) so you can balance the load front, back, left, right, and high-to-low.

5. Consider your pelvic floor

Most buying guides skip this entirely, but they shouldn't.

Wearing a weighted vest increases the pressure inside your abdomen, which adds load to your pelvic floor. For most women, this is fine and is even great for strengthening your core and pelvic floor over time, but if you've given birth, are postpartum, or have a history of pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence, you likely need to start lighter and progress slower than the typical 10% of bodyweight.

Look for a vest with very small weight increments (2.5 lb or less, ideally) so you can start at 3 to 5% of your body weight instead, then build up from there as you get stronger. Also consider seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist before you start, especially if you've had any pelvic floor symptoms in the past. Avoid holding your breath while you walk, and stop if you notice heaviness or leaking, or have any new pelvic discomfort.

Choose the right weight system

Once you've got the best fit, the weight system is the next thing that determines whether a vest will work for you long term.

Look for adjustable, modular weights

Weight progression is one of the biggest advantages of an adjustable vest, but a vest with a fixed weight gives you one setting and nothing else. If 10 lb feels too heavy when you start but too light a few months later, you'll need a different vest. 

An adjustable vest lets you add or remove weight plates as you get stronger. One vest can take you from 5 lb to 20 lb or more, so you'll be able to use it for much longer.

Choose small weight increments

Being able to adjust the weight increments matters as much as the total weight range because if the vest only increases by 5 lb steps, it might feel fine at 10 lb, then suddenly feel way too heavy at 15 lb. Smaller increments of 2.5 lb let you add weight more gradually, which just makes sense for smaller bodies.

For women starting out, being able to progress gradually is what protects your joints and your pelvic floor, and is also key for getting stronger and building muscle and bone.

Match the weight range to your goals

If you mostly use your vest for walking, posture, and bone health support, you'll likely do well with 5-15lbs, depending on your bodyweight and whether you have any medical concerns like pelvic organ prolapse or stress urinary incontinence. Building up to about 10% of your body weight and eventually higher is where the magic happens for that all important bone health.

If you weigh 150 lb, that's a starting point of about 15 lb. If you're newer to exercise or managing a pelvic floor concern, start at half that and build up. A vest that maxes out at 20 lb will work well for most women.

Choose materials that feel like clothing

A vest you only put on for workouts will get used a few times a week at best, but if it's comfortable enough to throw on for errands or gardening, or while you walk and talk on the phone, it'll get used every day. Remember, consistency is the biggest factor in getting those results you're after.

Here's what to look for:

  • Breathable fabric. Neoprene traps heat. Mesh back panels and lighter, moisture-wicking materials let you wear the vest longer without getting sticky and overheating.
  • Machine washable. Sweat happens, so being able to toss your vest in the wash is a huge plus.
  • Low-profile design. A vest that fits under a jacket or can layer over a tee is easier to wear for errands and around the house while you clean or work.
  • Premium hardware. Velcro is annoying, picky, and loud, but you also don't want buckles that clack with every step. More premium and functional closures make a vest feel like clothing rather than irritation.
  • Soft edges. Rigid panel edges can give you some nasty chafing over time, especially around the armholes and sides. Contoured, padded edges and seams that don't sit directly under your arms are much comfier.

Skip tactical and ruck-style vests

Tactical vests often look like a bargain, but they're built for a completely different job. They're meant to carry gear, and have rigid plates and flat fronts that compress your chest. They weren't designed for walking, strength training, or everyday wear.

You can wear one if it's all you have, but the fit issues we talked about so far will be much worse with one of these heavy duty vests. Most women who start with a tactical vest abandon it after a few weeks or less, so if you want to give yourself the best chance of being consistent, a vest designed around women's bodies is the way to go.

Frequently asked questions

How heavy should my weighted vest be?

For most women starting out, a vest in the 5lb to 15 lb range covers daily walking, posture work, and bone-supporting movement. Research on weighted vest walking typically uses loads around 10% of body weight as a starting point. If you weigh 130 lb, that means starting somewhere around 8-13 lb and building from there.

If you have a pelvic floor concern, are postpartum, or are new to exercise, start lighter (3-5% of body weight) and progress slowly.

Should I get a 12 or 16 lb weighted vest?

If you have the choice, skip both and buy an adjustable vest instead. A vest that adjusts from 5 lb to 20 lb lets you start with a lighter load and increase the weight as you get stronger so you can keep using the same vest for years. A fixed-weight vest gives you one option, and eventually you'll outgrow it.

Are weighted vests good for people with osteoporosis?

They can be, but they aren't right for everyone.

Researchers have studied weighted vests as part of exercise programs for women with low bone density, and the results are encouraging. They're typically used in combination with activities like walking and strength training, not instead of them.

If you've been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia, ask your healthcare provider before you begin. They can help you choose a weight and exercises that match your needs.

Can I wear a weighted vest if I have a prolapse?

Possibly, but you should be careful because wearing a weighted vest increases the pressure on your pelvic floor. That doesn't mean weighted vests are automatically off limits but you should start with a smaller load and progress slower than you would usually. Start at about 3% to 5% of your body weight and avoid holding your breath while you wear it. Stop if you notice any heaviness, leaking, or pelvic discomfort.

A pelvic floor physical therapist can help you decide whether and how to incorporate a vest into your routine. If you feel pain or symptoms worsening, stop and contact your clinician.

Is a weighted vest hard on your spine?

If your vest fits properly and has a weight that makes sense for you then it shouldn't strain your spine. The key is to ensure weight is evenly distributed on your front, back, left, and right, and that you use a starting weight that allows your spine to stay in the right position. If you find yourself leaning forward, hunching, or compensating in any way, the vest is too heavy or fitting poorly.

If you have scoliosis or another spinal condition, check with your healthcare provider before starting. They can help you decide whether a vest fits into your movement plan and what starting weight is safe for you.

When should you not wear a weighted vest?

Skip the vest, or talk to a clinician first, if you have:

  • Acute injuries or recent surgery
  • Significant pelvic organ prolapse, or postpartum less than 12 weeks (or as your provider advises)
  • Severe osteoporosis or recent fractures
  • Joint pain that worsens with the vest on
  • Heart conditions where adding load may not be advised

If you feel pain or dizziness while wearing the vest, stop and contact your clinician.

You're ready to find your fit
